Dear Colleague:

We are pleased to inform you about a new Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) issued on April 22, 2010 by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). The FOA solicits cooperative research demonstration and dissemination projects for the purpose of implementing the Children’s Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act (CHIPRA) of 2009 section on advancing and improving pediatric quality measures.

Letters of intent are due June 1, and applications are due June 30.

As required under CHIPRA, the Pediatric Quality Measures Program must : improve and strengthen the initial core child health care quality measures established by the Secretary; expand on existing pediatric quality measures used by public and private health care purchasers and advance the development of such new and emerging quality measures; and increase the portfolio of evidence-based, consensus pediatric quality measures available to public and private purchasers of children’s health care services, providers, and consumers. Measures developed by the Pediatric Quality Measures Program will be considered for the improved core measure set. CHIPRA requires these core measures to be available for public and private purchasers, programs and providers by January 1, 2013.

Under this FOA, the CHIPRA Pediatric Healthcare Quality Measures Program Centers of Excellence (U18), AHRQ anticipates making seven to nine awards that total $55 million over a 4-year period. The maximum annual award can be no greater than $2 million. Awards issued under this FOA are contingent upon the availability of funds and the submission of a sufficient number of meritorious applications. Because the proposed research will vary across applications, it is anticipated that each award’s size and duration will also vary.
